Dark Streets
Rachel Samuels 2008 | Featured, Jackpot Premieres, World Premiere
Great music, choreography, vocals. The story line was very weak -- almost as weak as the leading man's characterization. Atmospherically, the film captured neo-noir like no film since Tim Burton's Batman in 1989. But unlike any film noir every made, the leading character wonders around in a boozy, sex-saturated funk. Any real man would have grown up fast and become driven to solve/avenge the murder of his father. But I did love the ending. Chaz the whimp got exactly what he deserved. If you miss this movie at film festivals, look for it in a few months on one of the Lifetime networks,

This film said a lot, showed a lot and made a pretty good point all in 5 minutes. No time wasted, no vague theme.

The End
Nicola Collins 2008 | Featured, Pioneer Documentaries
Never a dull second. First-rate music score. Top-notch editing. Excellent production and direction (as I managed to tell Nicola). The titles were unique as well; seeing "The End" plastered across the screen in the beginning of the movie was pleasantly unsettling. In fact, that's the way I would describe the whole film: pleasantly unsettling. As for what members of the American audience can take away from it, well, we Colonials can learn that society in our biggest city after WWII (New York) was no more gang-ridden or violent or drug-infested than the biggest city of our English-speaking brothers across the Atlantic.
