Founded in 1981 in New York City, Sonic Youth remains one of the most progressive and successful bands to rise from the No Wave art and music scene. Mixing a blend of punk, garage rock, and avant-garde sensibilities, the band has captured the ears and hearts of adventurous music fans across the world for more than two decades.
SONIC YOUTH: SLEEPING NIGHTS AWAKE documents the band’s Reno concert on July 4, 2006. As part of the nonprofit group Project Moonshine, a group of teenagers were given digital cameras to capture both the concert and a series of personal interviews from those involved in the tour, including band members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Lee Ranaldo. Led by director Michael Albright and assistant director Brad Bynum, the Project Moonshine teens capture the essence of the influential band and the spirit of their live act. Through confessions from the band and the many people that ensure the tour's success behind-the-scenes, SLEEPING NIGHTS AWAKE provides an intimate exploration into the Sonic Youth machine–one that illuminates the power of innovation and accessibility while giving new and old fans alike a cinematic all-access pass.
